Final Segment #1:

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

In this segment, Jim takes 2-3 callers and asks them to submit five stocks that make up their largest positions in their portfolio.  He then comments on whether or not they are properly diversified.

Jim:     Told you I was serious about the diversification game… it is hard to make accurate predictions about this market… and this market, it feels down right impossible sometimes… that is why I have made it my personnel mission to trumpet the merits of diversification throughout the land… so it came to pass on Wednesday’s we play Am I Diversified?…

This is a chance to get your portfolio in shape… what you have to do is you have to call me… announce your five stocks… and then ask me, Am I Diversified?...

Caller:     Okay I have five stocks here, I have been chasing them all the way down - Deere (DE), PPL Corporation (PPL), Altria (MO*), General Electric (GE), Bristol-Myers (BMY*)?

Jim:     Let’s take a look at this… we have got an interesting grouping here… we’ve got a bunch of these stocks that I own for
my charitable trust, ActionAlertsPlus.com you can follow along… I send out emails saying that I wish this Altria - I wish it would go to $20... but it has got a great yield… that is a tobacco company… that is the old Phillip-Morris they split into two… Philip Morris International (PM) is the international, this (Altria (MO*) is the domestic… it has got a great yield… Bristol-Myers I own that one for the trust… this is got another fantastic yield… it is a great drug company… it has got a lot of great cancer drugs… PPL is probably a local company for my friend here… because this is Pennsylvania Power and Light… it is a well run company… General Electric, it is parent company to this network… I work for it… I own it for my trust… you could argue that it has been a terrible stock… I work for it, okay… and John Deere is a company that is deeply related to agriculture… much less to infrastructure, but it trades with the infrastructure names… what do we have… we have an agricultural stock, a big industrial, a utility, a tobacco, and a drug company… Ed has got it exactly right…I salute him.. .that is perfect diversification… that is exactly what we are looking for.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.

Caller:
     My five stocks are -
Consolidated Edison (ED), Merck (MRK), Wal-Mart (WMT*), McDonald's (MCD), and Research In Motion (RIMM). Tell me, Jim, am I diversified?

Jim:     Alright, talk about a hot button portfolio… RIMM we know I like it… did I tell you to take profits… I mean I told some people to take profits… I obviously didn’t make a big stink about it… that was bad… this is a tech company… and I still believe in it, it is up 20% for the year… Merck is a great yielding drug company… I think it is getting it’s act together… Wal-Mart I own it for
my charitable trust, ActionAlertsPlus.com, it is the finest retailer in the land… once again we salute Lee Scott, the former CEO… Con Ed, safest, bumped the dividend, it has got a nice yield… it has got a 5.87% yield, that is pretty good… utilities were slower today… McDonald’s got a 3% yield plus Jim Skinner, everyone knows McDonalds, I salute the company, I am trying to buy it for my charitable trust… alright what do we got here…. we got a food company, you know a food retailer… we got a tech… we got a drug company… we got a retailer… I am not linking food retail with store retail, they are very different… and we have a utility… that is again perfect diversification… some would quibble and say Jim, these are both consumer spend plays McDonalds and Wal-Mart… that would be wrong… Wal-Mart is a big retailer, and McDonalds is fast food… I like these two players… they both get the gold medal… and I am not talking about the flour.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.
