Final Segment #1:
'Am I Diversified?'
Wednesday, March 18, 2009

In this segment, Jim takes 2-4 callers and asks them to submit five stocks that make up their largest positions in their portfolio.  He then comments on whether or not they are properly diversified.

Jim:     Look, it's been a fabulous run, right... But does that mean you throw everything you learned out the window?... Look, we're not out of the woods yet... And, even when we finally get out of the woods, and on our way to the land of 1000 bull dances, which will eventually occur... I'm still going to preach diversification.

When I tell you to own a stock, that doesn't mean I want you to throw all your eggs in one basket. I hope you've done your
homework before you pull the trigger...

No. What I won't stand for is you just being in one kind of stock or one kind of sector, which is why diversification is the only free lunch...

Caller:     I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
Verizon (VZ), BP plc (BP*), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX*), China Xinhua 25 iShares Index (FXI), and Caterpillar Inc. (CAT)?...

Jim:     So, what do we have here?...

We've got a mineral company, we've got a China company, we've got an oil company, we've got a machinery company, and we've got a phone company...

That is absolutely perfect diversification, with some good yield, by the way... Now, we don't know if all the yield is going to be maintained, but that is darn good yield. Excellent play... excellent playing by our friend.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.

Jim:     Uh oh... Uh oh... If we were playing poker right now, Ann would be completely smoking me. Why? Because she has BMY, PFE and JNJ... That's three of a kind. This is not poker. We've got to make the change. I want you to keep the JNJ, because it is so low... I want you to sell the PFE. I want you to sell the BMY... and I want you to pick up a diversified industrial company... and perhaps, because of where we are right now in the cycle, I would like to see... let's buy a mineral company... let's buy an aggressive mineral company... Well, you've got MLM... that's materials. How about an oil? Let's get an oil...

Verdict:
No, NOT Diversified.
