Final Segment #1:
'Am I Diversified?'
Wednesday, March 25, 2009

In this segment, Jim takes 2-4 callers and asks them to submit five stocks that make up their largest positions in their portfolio.  He then comments on whether or not they are properly diversified.

Jim:     Alright, so we got a late day rally… Dow up 90... does that mean that you should have all of your eggs in one basket… no, come on… it is not something that I will stand for… diversification the only free lunch in the game… that is why we play Am I Diversified?… we try to do it every Wednesday… you call me, you tell me your top 5 holdings, I tell you whether your portfolio is diversified enough, or if you need to mix it up a little...

Caller:     I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
Veolia Environnement SA (VE), PICO Holdings Inc. (PICO), Ormat Technologies Inc. (ORA), IDEXX Laboratories Inc. (IDXX), and General Electric (GE).

Jim:     I have got to tell you that is one interesting portfolio… there are a couple of things going here… because it is a little more complex than most portfolios to really make a judgment of… General Electric, parent company of this network, I own it for
ActionAlertsPlus.com, my charitable trust, I play for it and I own it for salary, so therefore you can question my judgment of it, but I will tell you that it is a leading industrial and financial… IDEXX Labs, I am trying to describe the best way to say IDEXX, I like the stock, because it has got a bunch of businesses, it is a testing company… Veolia, this is a water utility, so it is a utility… ORMAT is a geo-thermal play, it is very good company, it is really a technology company… and Pico is a land play… so what we have, let’s call financial, water, geo-thermal… see I am worried that maybe these are forms of energy… but they are really not… we are going to say that it is diversified, and real estate.. so it is just diversified enough… it has got some very good dividends… it is not an easily analyzable portfolio, but that does not mean that it is bad.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.

Caller:
I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
Petroleo Brasileiro (PBR), Philip Morris International (PM), IBM (IBM), NYSE Euronext, Inc. (NYX), and Genzyme Corp. (GENZ).

Jim:     Okay, we have got Genzyme, a bio tech company, all bio techs weak because people are worried about the healthcare plan, I think that it is overdone on the sell side, and Genzyme also had a plant factor problem, I like Genzyme very much, it is a great drug company… Petrobras, really terrific oil company, really still drilling we know that they hired
Transocean Inc. (RIG) drilling for further out years, because they have a long term perspective, it is really well run… IBM, down a little bit, people going to buy Sun Micro, it finished down just slightly, IBM is really, really moving a lot of jobs to India, I hope that the White House really notices that, we are losing a lot of companies sending people overseas… Phillip Morris, you mentioned, I like Altria (MO*), which is a stock that I own for ActionAlertsPlus.com, my charitable trust, but Phillip Morris is very well run, this is the international tobacco business… and here is the confusing one, New York Stock Exchange, now this is going to get hurt very badly if they put in the Uptick Rule, I think that it is going to have a lot of expense, I think the Uptick Rule that we have been campaigning for endlessly is going to happen, I don’t think the New York Stock Exchange wants it, I heard a very luke warm interview yesterday on Bloomberg, by someone at someone at the New York Stock Exchange, really kind of grousing about it, I think that they are on the other side of what I have been pushing on the Uptick Rule, and their costs could go up, I would love for them to come on and explain themselves why they don’t seem to want to bring back the old Uptick Rule, I am directly opposite them on this… here we have a stock exchange, we have a drug company, an oil company, a tobacco company, and a technology company… that is terrific… he is diversified.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.

I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
AT&T (T), Consolidated Edison Inc. (ED), Nordic American Tanker (NAT), Waste Management (WMI), and HCP, Inc. (HCP).

Jim:     Well, I have got to tell you, this is what I consider to be one of the best portfolios… one of the best portfolios that has hit me, why… because it is dividend heavy and it has got growth too… North American Tankers we heard Herbjorn Hansson the other day, he has got the really best yield, it has got the best balance sheet, if you want to own a tanker company it is that one, not Dry Ships which trades every morning ridiculously… AT&T, well Randall Stephenson always welcome on the show, fantastic yield, I think it goes up, I think they boost the dividend… Waste Management, Mr. Steiner, is there a better CEO in terms of the shareholder, he has got a great dividend, and the company is making a very, very big turn, he came on the show and told a very good story just last week… Con Ed, this stock when it was at $39 I recommended it, when it got to $34 I re-recommended it, it is just on a tear, the dividend is safe and probably boosted… HCP, this is a little bit of a problem, because this is one that is linked to the healthcare plan of Obama, it does not do that well… we got healthcare, we got utility, we got a waste management company, we got a phone company, and we got a tanker… all of which have great yields… I say hallelujah, that man knows how to play.

Verdict:
YES, Diversified.
