Caller:
I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
General Electric (GE), Texas Instruments (TXN), Dendreon Corp. (DNDN), Research In Motion (RIMM), and Potash (POT)...

Jim:     Alright, now this is complicated... complicated for a couple of reasons... One is that RIMM, well that's Blackberry... and TXN makes the innards for a lot of cellphones... so I think we've got to count that as a pair. That's not diversified well. Dendreon is a spec. I'm not going to regard it as a typical biotech, because it's got that Provenge and it's been approved, but that's still a spec, and it's had a big run. Potash... we know that as a fertilizer company... and General Electric... I own it for
My charitable trust, ActionAlertsPlus.com... I'm paid in GE stock and I work for GE...

You have a diversified industrial company, you've got a fertilizer company and you've got a biotech spec, but you have two techs. We've got to make a change here, right here, right now... I'm suggesting that you own... How about this? Why not own an oil and gas company?... Me, I think
ConocoPhillips (COP*) would fit in perfectly. I would sell the TXN and buy COP*. There, that's the answer.

Verdict:
NO, Not Diversified.

Caller:
I want to know if I am diversified... Stocks are:
Olin Corp.  (OLN), EV Energy Partners LP (EVEP), Teekay Offshore Partners LP (TOO), Biovail Corporation (BVF), and  Starent Networks, Corp. (STAR)...

Jim:     Wow, this is a complicated portfolio... these are not names that lend themselves to an easy analysis...

Biovail is a drug company, Starent is a red, red hot company that does network equipment. This company is one of the hottest tech companies that I've ever seen. TK... this is an oil and gas partnership... Uh oh... be careful. We've got two oil and gas partnerships right here, and that is... that's EVEP... that's a match. We don't want matches... This is not Match Game... And Olin has a good yield.. it's a chemical company...

A chemical company, a drug company, a tech company... but two oil and gas... No, we're going to make a change, and we're going to bring in... How about a bank? How about
JPMorgan (JPM*)?

Verdict:
NO, Not Diversified.
