QLogic Corp. (QLGC)

Q:      You seem to like Brocade Communications (BRCD) and EMC (EMC) but what about QLGC? Wasn't it a former bellweather in the storage group? Could it be a star again?...

Jim:    You raised a great question. I happen to have not done enough homework on QLGC. When I saw the bid for Emulex, which is a big competitor to it, I got concerned. I will go back and redouble my efforts, but you're absolutely right. It was the bellweather but I don't like it right now. Maybe if I do more work on it, I'll change my mind.

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX*)

Q:      I have a fair amount of FCX in my portfolio right now and I was wondering if that could also serve as a substitute for GLD?

Jim:    FCX is far more copper than gold, so you really do not have a pure gold play. I used to own FCX for ActionAlertsPlus.com, my charitable trust. I decided that, if gold comes down, I would buy the SPDR Gold ETF (GLD). That is not a substitute. That is the actual price of gold. That's what you should be buying. I think it could go below $90.

United States Natural Gas (UNG)

Q:      There seems to be a large inequity in the energy sector between the current price of natural gas and the escalating price of crude oil. I don't recall ever seeing this large of a separation. Do you think there will be a correction that will bring the markets back in line?

Jim:    Alright listen... It's 18 to 1. It's the biggest disparity ever. There are a lot of buyers in the UNG. I don't trust that. Lots of articles in TheStreet.com where I'm chairman... also in the Financial Times and Dow Jones... saying how flawed that is. I do believe that natural gas is coming back, but please don't buy with the UNG. Pick a high-quality natural gas play... Southwestern Energy Co. (SWN*)... a bunch of them I've been owning for my charitable trust, ActionAlertsPlus.com. A much better way than playing the UNG ETF.
