Note: Additional opening comments from Jim, before he started taking the Lightning Round callers' questions...
Jim: Now, often, let me just tell you, in this particular segment - as is in many cases since the market got bad - I will steer you toward a better stock in a sector, alright... In other words, you say, "How about Sun Micro?" And, because Apple reported a good quarter, I will say that I like AAPL more than I like Sun Micro, but you know that I like AAPL anyway... I'm just telling you the dynamics... I am not going to say, no, no, no, no, no... I'm going to steer you toward the better stock in the example...
Then, Jim began taking callers' questions, and made his Lightning Round picks... |

Walgreen Co. (WAG*)
I am (still bullish on WAG)... Now, I
have to tell you... like many stocks
that I've liked, this thing has been
killed. It's gotten involved in a
bidding war with
CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS)
for Longs Drugs. And then it backed
away... but the CEO then left. My take
is this... I feel that WAG is a buy down
here but, I've got to tell you... nobody
else seems to feel that way, because it
seems to go down everyday, but I like
it.

I can't recommend anything having to do
with the automobile business right now,
because the build of cars is down so
much, that I am concerned. Let me send
you to
Monro Muffler Brake Inc.
(MNRO),
which I think... Look, I have to
admit... oh man, is this ever a tough
pot... I cannot go there... I cannot go
with CTB... I cannot go...

UPL |
51.20 |
Ultra Petroleum (UPL)
Alright, we had Michael Watford (CEO)
on. He told a really good story and
then, subsequently, the stock jumped $6
bucks. You'll see that this company's
trying to bottom. This is a growth
stock. When I talk to Investor's
Business Daily people, we know that UPL
is a different animal. It is a growth
natural gas company. We don't
necessarily have a good base here, but I
do have to tell you that I feel very
strongly that UPL will be the first one
to come back in that group. I would have
said
Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK)
at one point, but obviously, Aubrey
(McClennan, CEO) lost his stock in a
margin call. What a market that he could
lose it. It's like Sumner Redstone...
it's like Kurt Kekorian.

No, no, no... That's already been an
announced deal... Sell, sell, sell...
That's with Santander. We're not going
to go there. We're going to look for
other situations. We all know that I've
identified four "Fortress Banks" and
BB & T Corp. (BBT).
My "Fortress Banks"... once again...
Wells Fargo (WFC)...
JPMorgan (JPM*),
which I own for
my charitable trust...
US Bancorp (USB),
which reported today an okay number, not
a blowout number, but it's fine... and
Bank of America (BAC),
which is $2 above, I believe, where the
offering came... at $1.97. I'll stick
with those. I will not go beyond it.

I have trouble with that, even over the
long term. The company just has simply
not been able to deliver. Why go with a
metals company that hasn't been able to
deliver, when there are others that have
been able to deliver. I am going to send
you too to
Nucor (NUE).
A better dividend, better management.

Yeah, okay... This has a good yield,
alright... It yields 9.7%. I think the
yield is excellent. We've had Linda
McMahon on. She is the CEO. She has done
a good job. It is a yield play. It does
not have as much growth as I'd like, but
I'm sticking by it, because that's
dividend's good... and they just raised
it for other shareholders, other than
themselves. She's terrific. He's great
(i.e., Vince McMahon). WWE, I'm sticking
with...
