Mad Mail question:
Research
In Motion (RIMM)
Q: As a young
investor at the University of Iowa, I
got a CD (certificate of deposit) right
before the Fed started to slash rates.
The CD expires in less than a month.
What should I be looking to buy?
Would a portfolio of high-dividend
consistent growers be good? Or,
since I'm young, should I be more risky
and buy companies such as
Research
In Motion (RIMM)
and
Goldman Sachs (GS*)?
Jim: I would do a
mixture like I do for
my charitable trust... I've
got some growth stocks, like an
Abbott Labs (ABT*)...
I think that's good. I would own
Apple (AAPL),
because that's a super growth stock...
and you've got a long time frame.
At the same time, you might want to have
a
Kinder Morgan
(KMP),
which has a good yield... we've been
talking about that endlessly. And,
I've got to tell you... If you
really are a CD kind of guy, and you're
so conservative, go buy some of those VZ
bonds that were just priced tonight...
you get 8-9% for those. I'm only
mentioning that because you have a CD.
Otherwise, I would not recommend a bond
on the show.

JNJ* |

Mad Mail question:
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ*)
Q: Recently, you
were bullish on Johnson & Johnson.
The other day, JP Morgan downgraded JNJ*
to neutral. They state this is due
to "trading at a 27% premium to the sum
of its parts." Were they able to
do this math in August and September
while it was trading at around $70?
Why are they trying to take money out of
JNJ* during this recession, while you
say it's the best time to be in this
company? Is this an example of the
Wall Street "gangsters" at play?
Do you still believe in JNJ*?
Jim: I don't really
like that analyst that much...
he's a very powerful analyst. I
shouldn't say I don't... I
didn't like the call. He's
actually a good guy, and I've listened
to him for a long time. My partner
at
my charitable trust, Stephanie
Link, and I were saying what a silly
call this is, because we're going into a
recession. JNJ*'s great. He
knocked it down 2.75 points.
Because I happened to mention it on the
show, I was therefore frozen, or else I
would be buying it... I agree with
you... but he is not a Wall Street
gangster. He's a good guy.

Mad Mail question:
General question about REITs...
Q: In shopping for
high dividends, I have found a multitude
of REITs (real estate investment
trusts), yielding 20% or better.
Are REITs expected to bottom before
housing in 250 days? Could you
coach us homegamers on what to look
for?...
Jim: REITs are case
by case... okay?... I mean, if I
could recommend them for general growth
- and that's been an absolute
disaster... but Vornado Realty
Trust (VNO),
which is an office REIT, is doing great.
The answer is... that those REITs that
are yielding 20%... I don't trust them.
They probably will have trouble covering
their dividend. Stay away from
those.
